What is Skins?
Skins is a fun, alternative game format where skins are won one end at a time. This means every end matters, giving every team a chance to earn skins throughout the tournament.
Each skin is worth 30 DKK and can be exchanged for cash at the end of the tournament.
Practical Information
Gigantium is easily accessible by car, with plenty of parking available at the arena. It is also well connected by public transport, with frequent bus services between Gigantium and Aalborg city centre taking around 15–20 minutes. If you prefer to stay close to the venue, Scandic Aalborg Øst is just a short walk from the rink. Aalborg city centre also offers a wide range of hotels, restaurants and nightlife.
About Aalborg Curling Klub
Our club trains weekly at Gigantium, and our members regularly compete in bonspiels across Denmark and abroad. Following the success of our inaugural Skins event, we’re delighted to welcome you back for the second edition of Aalborg Skins.
We have exclusive use of the rink during the week leading up to the tournament and will prepare fresh ice to provide excellent playing conditions.
Rules for Skins Curling
The Skins format differs from regular curling in that a marker is awarded for each end won, with the value for each end increasing as the game progresses. An end is won if the team with the hammer scores two or more points or the opposing team steals the end with at least one point. If neither of these occur the skins are carried over to the next end and the total value at stake grows. This results in a very exciting offensive style of play where every end is like the final end of the game with teams going all out to win.
- Games will be six ends.
- A coin flip (or similar) will determine the hammer and stone color. The team winning the coin flip can choose either:
- (a) to throw first or second stone in the first end, or
- (b) the rock color they wish to use
- In a skins game teams play to win the end, not to accumulate a total score. To win an end:
- The team that has the hammer must score at least two points.
- The team without the hammer must steal at least one point.
If neither team wins the end, the end is blanked and the marker carries over until an end is won.
- The hammer:
- If a team wins the end, the hammer goes to the other team in the next end.
- If no team wins the end, the hammer changes teams for the next end.
- Scoring:
- End 1 and 2 are each worth 1 skin
- End 3 and 4 are each worth 2 skin
- End 5 and 6 are each worth 3 skin
Physical skin-chips will be used to track the score.
Final End: If neither team wins the final end, a draw to the button determines the winner of that end (i.e., Skips’ Rocks).
- The five-rock Free Guard Zone rule applies, as do all other standard curling rules.
In the final round, double the number of skins can be won.

Format of play
- Teams are divided in groups of four, first three rounds are played as round robin
- Fourth round combines all groups; teams will meet each other based on ranking, according to:
- 1 vs 4
- 2 vs 3
- 5 vs 8
- 6 vs 7
- 9 vs 12
- 10 vs 11
- etc (depending on the number of teams)
- Fifth round is also based on combined ranking
- Top clash: 1 vs 2 (3x skins)
- Challenger Clash: 3 vs 4 (2x skins)
- 5 vs 6
- 7 vs 8
- 9 vs 10
- Combined ranking is calculated baesd on the total number of skins earned thus far.
- After each match, one player from each teams plays a single draw to the button. Results are used as tiebreaker for combined ranking.
